When You Have That Child

Baby girl went to her first ballet class.  Yes, she did.  And she looked so cute in her bodysuit and tights.  But Andrew and I sat there both rather embarrassed.  You see, we have that child.  You know the one.  That child that runs around while all the other girls are nicely in a circle.  The one who sits down while everyone dances.  And the one who pouts in a corner because the music stopped, and she wants to touch something she was told not to.  Yup, we have that kid.  And while it's funny now, at the moment we looked at all the other parents, who looked right back at us with that other look in their eyes.

On set recently, I recounted this story and my friend said to me, "Look around at everyone here.  We were all probably that child."  It's true.  I was.  I turned out *sorta* all right.  As did those other folks on set.

  2. I have that child too haha. That's why we do gymnastics, because they let her run wild! I don't think she would do so well at a dance class. (We also avoid story times because frankly, she won't sit still for that!)

  4. Joanna, that is funny because I have had a theory for oh about 30 yrs now, that those 'non-conformist' children are the eventual leaders, independent thinkers and those that are not afraid to venture and explore. Be proud. Be glad. Just be embarrassed a bit til she does mature a bit more. lol

    1. That's what I like to think as well. So I'm hoping that this is just the lead up to great things....it doesn't make it easier when all the other parents are there, but oh well. She's a great child so what have I got to complain about?

  7. Very nice post! You made me smile with that anecdote.
I was the kind of kid who would be very sincere to be even mildly discreet and that would ask lots of questions, which caused my parents many unfortunate scenes!
My mom still jokes about it telling me that once I have my own kids I will "pay off" all the embarrassment I caused before.

    1. Of course she does. Though there are moments when we just want her to go along, but this resistance to it is what will make her an awesome adult!
