Rumi, Poo, and Threesomes

6.1.16

We all take ourselves very seriously. Too seriously. Wandering about like high powered business people, or trying to be profound and making sure that every thing we write, say, or do is full of wisdom and enlightenment. Like witticisms just drip from our tongues, and quiet reveries give mindful epiphanies.

But even Rumi, the poet, knew that the key to life is to not treat oneself as sacred, to not be too serious. He wrote a whole poem about having a good poo. And another one where he gets distracted halfway through thinking about a threesome.

See? If Rumi in his wisdom knows to laugh at himself and acknowledge the absurdity and folly of humanity, should we not also take a lesson from that?

I'm sorry, I got distracted halfway through by...uh...never mind.

"The world is full of things that are tragic or comic, heroic or bizarre or surprising, and those who fail to be interested in the spectacle that it offers are forgoing one of the privileges life has to offer."

Sustainable When Possible

21.12.15

I don't know if you know that the fashion industry is one of the worst polluters. Our cheap clothes are made in a way that damages our environment, and damages our fellow humans *low wages, and poor working conditions.*  It's true. As part of that industry, I try to be mindful of buying sustainable or fair trade, or both when I can.  I'm not perfect, clearly, but it is something I keep in mind and make conscious choices when I can.

Yesterday was probably a geek girls dream. I treated myself to a decaf Almond milk latte from the awesome coffee shop in the 'hood - SuperCoffee.  Then had a blast recording several new podcasts for the D&D game I'm in. Yes, I play D&D and in this game I'm a hesitant doctor who prefers to use her sword.

Sartorial Rabbit Hole of Joy, or Lyst

I've recently been going down the best rabbit hole ever. And I do mean that. I've been spending time on Lyst. It's seriously like a fashionista's online Mecca. You create an account and answer a whole bunch of questions about which designers you like and don't like, then your own private boutique is curated for you. Basically, Lyst scours a whole ton of online shops and puts them all in one place. Imagine, instead of tons and tons of boutiques spread across they're all in one place - like a mall - but so much more awesome because no one steps on your toes.

Exposure - Or Paying Artists, One Fashion Bloggers Rant

Let's be honest. Many of you who are online a lot have probably heard of Essena O'Neill and how she quit her instagram modelling account and came clean about the back deals with companies to promote brands.  There's a whole lot of controversy over whether it's real or a hoax, as well as general other thoughts about the validity of instagram/social media accounts.

Honest Straight Shooter

I don't like it when I think too much about others expectations of me.
It's a trap! *and I said that like in Star Wars, by the way*
But you know, sometimes I fall into it as well. I become a little too preoccupied with playing the game, or behaving how others expect  me too. And then I get frustrated and grumpy.

Fall, Winter, and Spring means that Andrew's business is in full swing. Which is great for finances obviously, but it also means a lot of business trips and a lot more responsibility on me at home.

Good Fear

We all feel it. We all react to it. It's fight or flight, right? We either run towards, or away from it. Fear, in some way or another, motivates us. I don't think it's all bad either. It's just a part of our being. An emotion, both good and bad. It can hold us back, but it can also motivate us forward.

Chase You?

Remember the chase?  That whole chase between men and women. The whole dance of he moves, and you either move with him or shut it down.  I like that chase.

The Dress I Wore

22.7.15

Zara-Bodycon-dress-womens-fashion

On pins and needles, I know. You've been eagerly awaiting the follow up post to this one. Well, here's the dress I did actually wear.  This one didn't move anywhere on it's own, it only moved with me.

That's one of my requirements for a good dancing dress: that it doesn't move of it's own accord, so that I don't have to spend the evening yanking and adjusting.

My other requirements:

1. Comfort. Stretchy or loose it has to be comfortable.
2. Breathable. Too much material and you heat up pretty fast. Then you're a sweaty mess, and not in the good way.
3. Not too intricate.  To many holes, loops, or architectural details, and someone at some point in the even is going to get caught in it, and something's going to tear.

And my last requirement: that it makes me smile.  That I look at it and something about it makes me energized and happy.  'Cause a sad dancing dress?  That would be baaaad.

The Dress I Didn't Wear

20.7.15

Spell-Designs-Route-66-Dress

This past Friday I had a friend's dance party, to celebrate her birthday. Now, you know I love to dance, and I love me a great dancing dress. I put this fringed backless dress on thinking it would be perfect for the evening. I do love it. But after taking these shots, I came home and did the test. Always do the test. Test out what you're wearing with what you're doing. Why? Because I dislike fashion holding back my actions. I don't want to be limited in my motion. I like the freedom.

So the test: I danced like I would for one song. During that time, the slip moved too much for my liking. It moved too far north, if you know what I mean. And that was after one song of dancing.

Nothing, not fire, not weather, not fashion will take dancing away from me. In this and all cases, if it doesn't function, it ain't happening. So, though I wanted to wear this, I decided that dancing all night with no worries was, and always will be, my priority.

What does this mean for the dress?  It means that until I manage to get an inch or two added to the slip, it's a going out and hanging out dress. Not a dancing dress - that calls for some very specific requirements....which I'll talk about in my next post when I show you what I did wear.

I know, you're on the edge of your seats.

Here's To Our Friendship Flaws

13.7.15

Spell-Shorts-Arnhem-Kimono-Star-Wars-Tee-Boho-Style
I have very imperfect friends. Some overshare, some drink too much sometimes, some say stupid things at the most inopportune moments, some can be harsh ...basically they make mistakes and have flaws, and are human.

All of them are well meaning, and caring, and accepting, and honest.

I can tolerate a lot as long those things are present. Tolerate isn't the right word. A lot of things don't bother me because of the presence of the others - that's a better way to put it. In fact, I count on my friends being imperfect, because that means that they'll hopefully be forgiving of my own imperfections. Of which I have many, and I try to surround myself with people who will forgive me when I say/do something stupid at the most inopportune of moments knowing that I probably don't mean it, because I'd like to think I'm well meaning, caring, accepting, and honest.

Days of Contentment

29.6.15

Spell-Designs-Backless-Dress
The last few days, I danced for probably seven hours combined.  It's incredible how much energy and emotion is released into the world by the simple act of dance.  I've been saying it for years, "Dance it out." And I always understood Meredith's *from Grey's Anatomy* need to have a 30 second dance party. There's always a good time to dance.

But more than that, I spent the weekend with the most wonderful people.  Friends, and peers, who despite everyone's flaws, accept and respect each other. No judgement and no expectations, except for the desire to 'suck the marrow out of life.'

On the Road Again

8.6.15

Arnhem-maxi-kimono-lace-romper-fedora
On my bike that is.  My bicycle is tuned up and on the road. I know, I know, some people continue riding all year 'round. I admire those people.....those crazy people. Me? I like to ride my bike when it's warm - ride all around the city - but not when it's cold. So there's this moment in Spring that occurs when the days are reliably warm enough that me and my bike are traipsing about town getting errands done.

It's also really cool to be able to do that first 30 km ride and be totally fine afterwards.  Here's to cycle season!
